We don't do this work alone. Our programs are built with artists, writers, and organizations who believe, as we do, that creative work can change lives inside prison and after release. Together we bring Comic Creation, Writing as Meditation, and Hope & Mic to people in prisons and in re-entry.
In 2025, the Ben Free Project won a Silver Anthem Award for Partnership or Collaboration, in the Education, Art & Culture category. The honor recognized Comic Creation, our weekly program at Lancaster State Prison, funded through a California Arts Council contract and taught in partnership with three-time Ringo Award winner Rylend Grant and Half-Evil Comics. Through this work and our wider programming, we've partnered with Caits Meissner of PEN America, Austin Alexander of Hope & Mic, and Dr. Randall Horton to bring healing, storytelling, and advocacy into prisons and beyond.

Three-time Ringo Award winner Rylend Grant and Half-Evil Comics teach Comic Creation with us, a graphic-novel storytelling course. Our weekly Comic Creation class at Lancaster State Prison won a 2025 Silver Anthem Award.

We've partnered with Caits Meissner of PEN America to bring healing, storytelling, and advocacy into prisons and beyond.

Hope & Mic is a creative writing, spoken word and performance program led by Austin Alexander, designed for prisons and re-entry settings. Participants write, revise, and perform their own work, building literacy and real confidence speaking in front of others.

Dr. Randall Horton partners with us to bring healing, storytelling, and advocacy into prisons and beyond. He also serves as Ben Free Project's Director of Performing Arts Programs.
