Second Chances Through Words (SCTW)
Second Chances Through Words is a transformative writing initiative designed to empower incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as youth in juvenile programs, with the tools and skills to express their unique stories and aspirations. After Ben’s experience working closelyl with the Cal State system’s Project Rebound, the UC system’s Underground Scholars, the organizations like Long Beach City College’s Justice Scholars, he saw that there is a real need for formerly incarcerated college applicant seeking guidance about how to gain admission. Through writing practice, we explore Personal Insight Questions, college application essays, and scholarship essays, aiming to provide a platform for these often marginalized voices to be heard, fostering personal growth, self-discovery, and a path toward higher education and a brighter future.
We firmly believe that everyone has a story worth telling and that writing can be a powerful vehicle for transformation and redemption. Our program is centered around the philosophy that education and self-expression should not be restricted by one’s past mistakes but rather leveraged as an opportunity for growth and healing. By delving into the Personal Insight Questions, participants will reflect on their experiences, values, and ambitions, culminating in powerful college application essays that showcase their resilience and potential. Additionally, our dedicated team of mentors and educators will guide them in crafting compelling scholarship essays, providing them with the tools to access educational opportunities that can redefine their life trajectories. Through this program, we aspire to break the cycle of recidivism, open doors to higher education, and ultimately foster a more compassionate and inclusive society that recognizes the potential for transformation in every individual.
